WHILE Ipswich is growing at a rapid rate, it has some time before it catches up to the about six million-plus population of our Indian sister city Hyderabad. But that’s not to say our humble 170,000-strong city can’t be a worthwhile contributor to the sister city relationship. A delegation of officials from Hyderabad City – including Mayor Karthika Reddy Banda – visited Ipswich yesterday, keen to talk up relations between the two cities.
Education was a big talking point at the mayoral reception put on for the visiting delegation at the Brookwater Golf Club, as well as exchanges between the two city’s educational institutions.
Mayor Banda said it was her first visit to the city, after having signed up to the sister city agreement, which includes Brisbane, only last year.
“This is the first time we have signed with two cities,” she said.
“It is a nice chance to exchange our ideas.”
Mayor Banda said that despite the differences – “Hyderabad has a thickly populated area, but Ispwich is a smaller population area” – there was still a great deal to learn from Ipswich and its development management.
“We have a nice chance to go through these activities and management,” she said.
Mayor Paul Pisasale said the sister city agreement with the large Indian city had put Ipswich on the world map.
“It’s about making sure we understand what makes a city grow. What makes a city grow is sharing technology, sharing a vision and the culture,” Cr Pisasale. “We can learn a lot from each other.”
Cr Pisasale said future student exchanges between to the two cities would further strengthen their ties.
ayor Banda and her delegation are in Australia to attend the 2011 Asia Cities Summit which begins in Brisbane today.
The summit will feature government officials from around the world along with guest speakers Sir Richard Branson and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.

The Asia Pacific arm of international software services firm, Dhanush InfoTech will call Queensland home, investing $1.5 million in a state of the art facility at Springfield.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said apart from bringing the international ICT industry to Queensland, the Indian firm’s Springfield premises would create more than 200 local jobs during its first few years of operation.
“This is a coup for Springfield which has been positioning itself as one of Queensland’s hi tech hubs of the future,” Mr. Fraser said.

11th September 2009: Trade officials from the Queensland Government, Australia have visited the Dhanush Corporate headquarters at Hyderabad, India on the 11th of September 2009. The visiting officials were headed by Mr. Rod Solomon, Trade Commissioner to South Asia. 27th July 2009, New Delhi : Dhanush InfoTech, Hyderabad has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with Datec PNG Limited, the largest ICT solution and business service provider in Papua New Guinea, at the Federation House (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)) in New Delhi.
