Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 was released in August 2011 as a truly global solution, designed to scale with global businesses. Simple enough to deploy for a single business unit in a single country, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 also support the unique requirements for business systems in multiple countries. Multiple currencies, multiple time zones, multiple languages, and compliance with multiple banking and reporting standards and legislative codes give the global coverage that international companies require.

Adding to this, one of the key objectives for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 has been to further improve the support of a single global instance ERP implementation.

In brief, how does Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 support companies that want to support their international operations with a centrally-managed ERP solution?

  • Additional support of localisations managed in a single instance Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 (released in August 2011) already delivers regulatory support and localisations for 25 countries. With the release of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 an additional 11 countries will be supported – enabling deployment for these new countries as well as all existing countries in one single instance: Brazil, Czech Republic, China, Estonia, Hungary, India, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Russia.
  • Minimisation of user exposure to unnecessary complexityWhile all users have access to the same instance, country specific functionality is enabled based on the location of the legal entity. A user’s access to company specific capabilities can be restricted through security setup to help simplify the implementation and user experience.
  • Data management and securityIn Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 data can be easily shared to avoid redundancy, and data security can be increased by using security policies and effective dates. In the upcoming release functionality was added to support scenarios when data sharing is not permitted or beneficial. Data partitions can be created to isolate and restrict access to data sets. This is a must have capability in a scenario where business units are autonomous and sharing data would add additional complexity or is even prohibited.

Why a single instance strategy?

Many different deployment options can be considered with an ERP solution. Single instance deployments allow international corporations to gain efficiency through synergies between their divisions. Single instance deployments offer the opportunity to share IT infrastructure between the legal entities; which could drive down costs of the deployment. In addition to IT efficiencies, business operations benefit by sharing data and business processes across legal entities.

Business efficiencies and benefits include:

  • Management of vendors, customers and employees can be handled centrally, streamlining these relationships on a global basis
  • Management of product information is centralized, including release management of the products to the individual organizations
  • Intercompany business is automated for processes including sales, purchasing and the corresponding financial transactions
  • Services, including central AR, AP and procurement, are shared A single-instance strategy is particularly compelling in that it helps lower cost in the many organizations that struggle with redundant data, high training costs and lack of insight across disparate systems and processes.
